IS A SUSTAINABLE INFORMATION SOCIETY POSSIBLE?

Scheper, Torben & Zetl, Anne

Abstract: The ‘information society’ and ‘sustainable development’ are two expressions which are seldom used in connection with one another. However, what both concepts have in common is their high profile in current public discourse. Politics, research and the media frequently deal with these subjects – which does not necessarily benefit the clarity of their meaning. Often, the concepts of sustainable development and the information society are understood in very different manners, or are even only vaguely understood at all. This contribution attempts to connect these two terms – both of which are highly relevant to today's society and for the future. This integrative approach has in part been taken up by politics and academia. Given the need for sustainable development, it seems to us urgently necessary that this approach be further explored.
