Editorial: WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNICATION

Prof. Dr. Harald Heinrichs

Dear Readers,

In the editorial of the last issue we announced, that we will re-name our journal into “International Journal for Sustainability Communication” and that the first issue of the relaunched journal will be a special issue on climate change communication. Today we are happy to present to you the results of our efforts.

In order to develop the journal further into a truly international communication channel we invited Professor Edward Maibach, Director of the Centre for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University in the US, as guest editor for the special issue. If you read the articles of the special issue, I am sure, you will agree, that this was a good decision. Edward Maibach entered new scientific communities, especially in the US, which we have not reached before. He managed to gather an impressive number of relevant papers. Indeed, the number of high quality papers succeeded our expectations by far, resulting in the decision that will produce a second volume on climate change communication in fall. We believe firmly, that the current issue and the next issue can make a difference in transdisciplinary discussions on this urgent and pressing topic. The main focus of the succeeding issues from winter onwards will be on the following topics:

  • Environmental Informatics and New Media (winter 2008)
  • (Higher) Education for Sustainable Development (summer 2009)
  • Participation, Cooperation and Sustainable Development (winter 2009)

Meanwhile the winter issue is already closed, paper submissions for the issues of 2009 are welcomed. Beyond the major topics, papers on the overarching theme of environmental and sustainability communication, including issues such as media communication, citizen participation, stakeholder cooperation, new media or environmental and sustainability education, can be submitted at any time. Based on the very positive experience of the collaboration with Edward Maibach, our first guest editor, we like to invite interested colleagues with innovative ideas of relevant topics to serve as guest editor for future issues. Moreover, in order to strengthen the inter- and transdisciplinary community of environmental and sustainability communication researchers and practitioners we invite you to (self-)nomination for our advisory board. Dear readers, we wish you a pleasant and fruitful reading!

Sincerely,
Yours,

Harald Heinrichs
